It is heartening to note that University Grants Commission permitting the Universities to include Astrology as one of the subjects in their degree and P.G courses, but unfortunate that lot of controversy is raised by the so called rationalist scientists.
Astrology a science of astronomy identifying the stars and planets, calculating their distances, motion, orbital path, and as part of all the influence of the planets, stars on human brain and activity. It is not superstitious and meaning less belief of the people as being argued by these rationalist scientists, but a science of planets, calendar, seasons, seasons influence on mans activity, farming etc. Whether it is Ptolemy, Newton, Pythagoras or other astronomers who discovered the functioning of the universe the stars, the planets etc., themselves have written about the influence of these planets on the humans and their activity. Again it is they only that gave the week days the names of the planets and the then contemporary astrologers of India have given the names of the stars to the months and it is how in course of time modified and brought the calendar to the present shape. And our rationalist scientists have no hesitation to use that calendar with thithi vara nakshatra etc. including for fixing launching times of the rocket testing and space shuttles, inauguration of their science labs and what not.
What are the parameters of the science? More so of social sciences based on lot of statistical information-statistics can prove and disprove anything-and based on such statistics social sciences are there in the curriculum and these rationalist scientists consider those social sciences sacrosanct though the economic policies framed under such economic theories of social sciences doesn't work, such as present day recession. Astrology predicted recession and in our foreword to panchang of 1999-2000, we have cautioned calamities and recession. Even then social sciences are sacrosanct but not the astrology. Astrology satisfies many parameters to be called as a science and there may be errors in astrological predictions due to shortcomings of the interpreting astrologer but that does not give a right to deny the astrology its place as a science. If a patient dies we are not rejecting the medicine its rightful place but only attributing to the failure of Doctor. Why not the same case with astrology and astrologers. Astrology purely based on the positions of the planets at the time of birth, and their influence and gravitational pull on the individuals and his activities. The positions of the planets are nothing but astronomical calculations using that today rockets launched on to the moon or mars accurately. So calculations are calculations, which nobody can deny, then what these so called rationalist scientists are denying we do not understand. Astrology is not black magic and black magic is not astrology. Without going deep into the science of astrology these pseudo rationalists with only superficial hearsay knowledge, they want to deny astrology its rightful place in curriculum. Even Newton himself said that after having studied the science of astrology that he didn't want to join the chorus saying, " sir I have studied you have not ". Hippocrates said " A PHYSICIAN CAN NOT SAFELY ADMINSTER MEDICINE IF HE BE UN-ACQUAINTED WITH ASTROLOGY ". Kepler says " The planets forming angles upon the earth by their luminous beams, of strength to stirrup the virtue of sublunary things, have compelled my unwillingly belief. ".
The practice and following astrology is not limited to India (India with lot of gullible illiterate people) but in almost all the countries from east to west and in China it dates back to 2513 BC. You find lot of astrologers in U.S. said to be a most advanced industrialized and literate country. For the last 200 years in U.S. a farmer's almanac is being published and is being followed for sowing, harvesting etc., as is common in India too.
One and all know, that Dhanvantari was the science of Medicine, Vastu the science of Engineering and Architecture, and Astrology the science of Astronomy and calendar. In the Gurukula system of education in ancient India, SHAT SASTRAS were taught and of them Astrology was called VEDA CHAKSHU - eye of Veda. The so-called rationalist scientists have no objection in introducing Ayurveda Medicine as one of the streams of medicine and duly giving recognition to it. The Government both state and center have recruited ayurvedic Doctors, opened dispensaries and dispensing even to the Central Government employees under CGHS. Unfortunate it is that these scientists are not aware that Astrology is an inseparable part of Ayurveda. The Amruth Ghatis being given in Panchang is meant for using the medicines and potions at those specific times for its effective working on the human body. Similarly vastu is a science of engineering of the ancient Indian society according to which the monuments, which are being preserved with utmost reverence by these scientists, were constructed. Unimaginable it is that many huge structures were raised moving huge boulders, beams and what not, to such heights without the help of the huge cranes of the present day. We, including the scientists, look to these monuments awestruck. It is this Vastu that gave to the ancient people of India, as to how a structure is to be constructed, the parameters to be used, the ratio between the height and thickness of the walls, the foundation, the materials to be used, the method of procuring such materials, the time and date for procuring such material and starting such work all are associated closely with Astrology for guidance.
While this is the background, suddenly how these rationalist scientists have awaken to oppose the introduction of astrology in the University curriculum and gone to the extent of demanding the resignation / removal of UGC chairman. Perhaps many of these rationalist scientists might have closed their eyes while their kith and kin are getting married, or covertly sending their kith and kin to astrologers to find the future, including their own and at the same time shouting from the tree tops at the height of pitch that this astrology is a blind belief and should be driven away from the minds of the large majority of the people.
In curricula we have no objection for having fiction as a subject but not the astrology, which is a science of planets of ancient India. The astrology is calculating and arriving at the new moon, full moon, the eclipses and many other things including low and high tides of the oceans. The Kandla port uses these calculations for clearing the incoming and outgoing vessels in to its port. These rationalist scientists agree that with full moon and new moon the mental activity varies and influences the lunatics and in their treatment the lunar cycles are also reckoned. The very word lunatic is arrived from Lunar - Moon. While these rationalistic scientists accepting the influence of planets from one side and opposing the science of astrology on the other.
Yes there may be astrologers who create unwarranted fear and apprehensions in the minds of gullible people but that doesn't deny the astrology its due place and one and all should condemn if any body is exploiting the gullible people in the name of astrology.
There is no science that gives an idea of what is in store for an individual in future except the science of astrology. Everyone knows what is his past what is his present but not his future. What is wrong if astrology plays its role in giving an idea of what is his future so that he can prepare himself to face any untoward situation.
So for anybody opposing for opposition sake is not correct. Let them study first before calling it mad dog. In this matter Dr.Butler was frank enough in admitting that he studied astrology to prove it a blind belief, but became a staunch believer.
Billions of people are believing, following and practicing astrology world over. Over centuries the subject astrology withstood the onslaught and with every onslaught the number following and patronizing is multiplying. Really it doesn't need a defense.
We hope that prudence and better counsel prevail on these scientists and rationalists.
